map Travel about an hour north of High Level, Alberta, hang a mean left, and experience bush-road travel for another 65 kilometers, and at the end of the road you will find the hamlet of Zama City. It is a small oilfield community that is home to about 300 permanent residents, but grows to well over 3500 during the busy winter months. The Zama Fire-Rescue department’s territory covers approximately 8000 square kilometers in the Municipal District of Mackenzie No. 23, which is accessed mainly by lease and winter roads. No pavement here.

The Zama Fire-Rescue consists of one engine, one rescue unit, and one EMR/BLS ambulance. The fire station in Zama is a 3-bay facility complete with an upstairs lounge/training area, male & female locker rooms, gym, and administration office. Our department is 100% volunteer!!

The biggest obstacle has been keeping long-term volunteers. People’s residency in Zama is roughly 3-5 years, so the training and re-training is constant.

The department has filled a much-needed gap in community services. With more facilities calling Zama their home, and an hour and a half to the nearest fire/medical services, having us around makes it a safer place to live.

We competed in extrication competitions since 1997, and attended Western Canadians twice. It has been an incredible learning experience for us all.

Over the next year we are working towards a training ground here in Zama. We are also looking at hosting a municipal-wide training/competition weekend in June ’99. On top of that we run an annual snowmobile poker rally, school programs, department and community training courses, Fireman'’ Ball, and of course "calls" – We are quite a busy organization.

The department would like to thank all of the sponsors and volunteers who’s generous have made this all possible. We would also like to thank the host city of Whitecourt for their hospitality. Thanks!!

On behalf of all the Members of the Zama Exact Attack Pack… Good Luck to all the participants of the 1999 North-Central Alberta Regional Extrication Competition!
