Bon Accord Fire Department

map The Bon Accord Fire Department was originally organized in the summer of 1977 by the developers of Woodglen Condominium Project, funds were made available and a 1963 Mac 1050 pump, fire truck was purchased from the City of Edmonton. Town's people volunteered to join the fire brigade and Mel Kennett was named Fire Chief. The training was provided by Ken Finlinson. Three months later the fire Commissioner's office sent a man out to test the newly formed Fire Department. The O.K. was given and the Bon Accord Fire Department was now official. This was now early December 1977, five days later the fire department met its first challenge, a house fire in town and the department hasn't looked back since.
In 1980 Sturgeon County formed the Bon Accord Fire District. The county provided the fire department with a 1968 GMC front mount fire truck to protect this area around the Town of Bon Accord. It was 1984 when the town replaced the 1963 Mac fire truck with a 1982 GMC 850 pump, fire truck to protect the town. The Sturgeon County then supplied a 1800 gallon water tanker to our fire department for support in the county.
In the late 1980's with injuries to firefighters from riding on the tail board of fire trucks, the Bon Accord Fire Department needed to come up with a way to transport firefighters safely to the fire scene or rescue scene. We approached the Town of Bon Accord and they could not meet the financial obligation to purchase a Rescue Van, the Sturgeon County granted us $5,000.00 for the Rescue Van. The Bon Accord Firefighters using donated money, equipment and six months of volunteered man hours, bought a 1979 1 ton linen van and converted it into a rescue van that has served the Sturgeon County and Bon Accord communities ever since.
The Bon Accord Firefighters felt that forming a charitable organization would help raise funds to support the newly refurbished rescue van. In 1991 the Bon Accord Firefighters formed the Volunteer Firefighters Association of Alberta (Bon Accord) and through this association, funds would be raised to benefit the Bon Accord Fire Department. Through the efforts of the Firefighters the association it has helped to provide the communities with the purchase of equipment which includes the Hurst Jaws of Life.
To date the Bon Accord Fire Department has a compliment of 30 Volunteer Firefighters Manning 2 Pumpers, 1 Rescue Van and 1 Tanker, Serving the Town of Bon Accord and a District of Sturgeon County.
