| History of Whitecourt
At the turn of the century, Whitecourt, then known as
Sagitawah (a Cree word
meaning “where the rivers come together”), was the site
of a
Hudson’s Bay Company substation.
By 1904-05, the first settlers began arriving and in
1910 the community assumed
its present name. In 1922, Western Construction and Lumber Co. Ltd.,
started operations and today the company continues to play a major
role in the Town’s economy, as Millar Western.
A-CTMP Mill was constructed in 1987 in Whitecourt by
Millar Western Pulp,
followed by a newsprint mill by Alberta Newsprint Co. Ltd. in 1990.
A major lumber mill and
medium density fibreboard plant is located in Blue Ridge.
In the mid-1950’s, the influence of the oil and
gas development was felt and the
population has risen from 700 at that time to the last census count
in 2001 of 8,334.
A fibre fired generation station and shake mill are
in operation.
The forest, oil and gas industries, and tourism create the basis
of Whitecourt’s economy.
