When are my taxes due?

Current taxes are due on or before the first banking day in July.

In accordance with the Municipal Government Act, payments will be considered paid on time if received at the Town Office by 4:30 p.m., postmarked by Canada Post, or processed by a financial institution on or before the due date.

If a Canada Post postmark is absent or illegible, the date received by the Town of Whitecourt will be considered the payment date. Commercial postage meter imprints will NOT be honored.

Please allow adequate mailing time to avoid late payment penalties.

An appeal against your assessment does not exempt you from paying taxes on time or from late payment penalties.

What types of payment does the Town accept ?

In person: Payment may be made at the Cashier, Main Floor Town Office, between 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (closed from Noon to 1:00 p.m.) Monday to Friday. Cash, cheque, Interac, Visa or MasterCard accepted.

After Hours Drop Box: Payments made by cheque can be deposited in the drop box at the front entrance of the Town Office.

Post-dated Cheques: the Town of Whitecourt will accept post-dated cheques. Cheques must be dated for the due date or earlier.

Mortgage Company Payments: If your mortgage company is paying your taxes they will receive a report for your taxes and you will receive the original tax notice for your records. The property tax notice will show the name of your mortgage company. If the mortgage company name does not appear on the notice and you believe it should, contact your mortgage company immediately.

Make cheques payable to the Town of Whitecourt and ensure the remittance portion of your notice accompanies your payment. Please ensure your cheque is completed accurately as the Town of Whitecourt is not responsible for errors and/or omissions.

Financial Institutions: Payments can be made at most financial institutions in Whitecourt.

A tax installment payment plan is the smart way to pay your property tax. Now you can pay your taxes in twelve monthly installments instead of a single large payment.

Persons wishing to start paying taxes under the Tax Installment Payment Plan are required to make application to Customer Service, Main Floor, Town Office before December 31 of the current year. Bring in your completed form to speed things along (Application Form (pdf format)

What is a School Support Declaration?

It is a declaration of Roman Catholic faith or other. If you are Roman Catholic, the school portion of your taxes are directed to that school district, otherwise your school taxes are directed towards the Alberta School Foundation. How are my taxes calculated?

Formula to calculate annual levy: Assessed Value x Total Mill Rates / 1000 = annual levy
ie. $150,000 X 5.6161 / 1000 = $842.42 (municipal taxes)

What is a Tax Certificate?

It is a Town produced document that provides: the owner name, tax roll number, legal description property address linc number, last levy date, last tax levy, supplemental levy, taxes outstanding and the amount of the prepayment and the date of the last payment.
