| Dog Licenses Bylaw No. 1147 requires that all dogs within the Town of Whitecourt
be licensed. We also have a limit of two dogs per household. Dog licenses are valid from January 1 to December 31 of the current year. New licenses are available for early purchase starting December 1 to 31, for 25% off the regular fee, but you have until January 31 to purchase your tags for the new year. Fees are: Dog $25.00 After June 30 tags are 50% off. All discounts are only applicable for voluntary license purchases. Animal Offenses All pets must be kept on your property or under your control when off your property. You are responsible for your pet if it is found running at large. The dogcatcher will not enter your yard to take the animal to the pound, but will retrieve the dog/cat if it is outside of your property. Animals will be kept at the pound for three full working days only. Dogs are not allowed on playgrounds. Running at Large/Impounded Fee (Within a 24 Month Period) First Offense - $50.00 * Plus feeding costs of $4.00/ working day for dogs in the pound. Fine for harboring an unlicensed dog is $25.00 plus the cost of the dog tag (discounts do not apply, as this is an involuntary purchase). If you allow your dog to howl or otherwise disturb your neighbors, you may be liable for a fine of $50.00. Animal Adoption WHARF (Whitecourt Homes for Animal Rescue Foundation) is a non-profit
organization that rescues animals that are abandoned. You can adopt
a pet from them by calling: You can also adopt a pet though the Edmonton SPCA; check out their web site at www.espca.com. Animal cruelty If you witness cruelty or neglect to animals you can contact the SPCA
at (800) 455-9003 or the local RCMP.
Our family just got a puppy, how do I go about getting him a license? All dogs in town must have a dog tag; they are available for purchase
at the town office. Dog tags require renewal each year, as they are
valid from January 1 to December 31. I bought my daughter a cat for her birthday; do I need to license it? We do not require cats to be licensed in the Town of Whitecourt but under the domestic animal bylaw you are required to keep your pet on your property. Cats that wander on to neighbour's property or public property can be picked up by the dogcatcher and put in the pound. My dog is in the pound. How do I get it out? What will it cost?

If your dog has a tag or a tattoo and you have been contacted so you
know they are in the pound, it might be a good idea to stop by the vet
clinic and verify that it is your dog you are paying for. Our pound
is housed at the vet clinic but before you get your dog you need to
come down to the Town Office and pay the pound fines. The fines are: My cat is missing. How do I find out if it is in the pound and how do I get it out if it is? What will it cost? If your cat has a tattoo and you have been contacted you won't need
to stop by the vet clinic and verify that it is your cat you will be
paying for. Before you go pick up your cat at the pound you will need
to go to the Town Office to pay the fine. The fines are: When I am out walking my dog do I have to have her on a leash? Also is there a bylaw requiring owners to pick up their pet's waste? It is not required to have your dog on a leash when you are out walking but you must have them under your control. When out walking your dog remember they are not permitted on playgrounds and private property without the owner's consent. The Town does not have a specific bylaw pertaining to animal waste but it does fall under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act. So when you're out walking your dog it is considered littering if you do not pick up any waste they leave behind and you may be liable for a fine under the Provincial Act. |
